Fake Dating The Quarterback

Synopsis

Scholarship student Chelsea is getting bullied, and she invents the perfect shield: tell everyone she’s dating Ethan, the star quarterback. Then Ethan finds out and proposes a deal — she tutors him out of his GPA hole, he keeps up the fake romance. They fend off jealous cheer captain Valentina and Ethan’s bitter adoptive sister Mei, and somewhere in the middle of the act, the fake affection turns real. It ends the only way it can: Ethan asks Chelsea to homecoming, in public, for real.

Why it works

This is the fake-dating rom-com in its purest short-drama form, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything else. The tutoring-for-cover deal gives the relationship a reason to spend time together that isn’t just contrivance, and the obstacles (a jealous cheer captain, a hostile adoptive sister) are exactly the right size — annoying enough to matter, small enough to beat. Chelsea and Ethan also have genuinely good banter, which is what the whole fake-dating genre runs on and what most entries forget to include. When the fake affection starts leaking into the real, you can see it happening instead of being told about it. Sometimes you want the genre played straight, with charm and a homecoming dance.

Watch out for

If you need your dramas with a body count and a revenge arc, this will bore you to tears. The stakes are homecoming and GPA. That’s the point, and also the ceiling.
